PARENT COUNCIL

North Kessock Primary School
Parent Forum and Parent Council

In August 2007, new legislation came into effect that introduced new rights for parents to become involved in their children’s learning. All parents automatically became members of the new Parent Forum. The Parent Forum has a new right to have their views represented collectively by a Parent Council.

A Parent Council is a smaller group of the Forum who can work with the school and others to represent parent’s views. A Parent Council can: -

. Support the school in its work with pupils
. Gather and represent parents views
. Promote contact between the school, parents, pupils, the education authority and the local community
. Fundraise
. Organise and help out at and school events
. Be involved in appointments of senior staff

A new North Kessock Parent Council has been formed to continue to develop the very positive working partnership between staff and parents at the school. Staff and parents on the previous School Board worked together, with advice from the education authority and consultation with parents, to develop a constitution that has now been adopted. Copies are available from the school office, or by e-mail from Lesley MacLachlan – lesleypopeuk@yahoo.co.uk

The Parent Council currently has 5 parent members. Mrs Julia Sinclair is the school staff representative and Miss Hazel Henderson, the head teacher, attends meetings in an advisory capacity. Local councillors are also encouraged to attend meetings and are kept informed of Parent Council activities. It is hoped that a member of the North Kessock Community Council will volunteer to be co-opted on to the Parent Council to strengthen links between the school and the wider North Kessock community. There are also a number of parent volunteers who have expressed an interest in helping out with fundraising and social activities.

The Parent Council members meet on average 6-7 times a year and anticipate its priorities for 2008 will be the school building; the growth of the village and the implications of the housing development in terms of the school and fund raising activities.

Further information on the Parent Forum and Parent Council can be obtained from North Kessock Primary School or Lesley MacLachlan – lesleypopeuk@yahoo.co.uk
